Reasons to limit data sharing may include: ​

  • informed consent limits or doesn’t permit sharing​

  • compromised safety or privacy of research participants which can’t be mitigated through removing PII​ (personally identifiable information)

  • licensing agreements preclude sharing​

  • if data are already available somewhere, NIH does not expect data to be shared again
