What is changing about NIH Data Management and Sharing Plans in 2026? 

On February 25, 2026, the NIH released a notice regarding planned changes to NIH Data Management and Sharing Plans

What we know now (last updated May 26, 2026)

  • NIH has updated the Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan Format Page.
  • The new DSMP Word document is now available and entitled 2026 Pilot DMS Plan Format. 
    • The new DMSP format consists primarily of structured yes/no questions with checkboxes.
    • For grants submitted on or after May 25, 2026, only the new 2026 DMSP format will be accepted.
    • The new DMSP form is now available in DMPTool.
    • Data sharing requirements have not changed.
