Table Headers
Answer
Table cells can be labeled as headers. This tells screen reader software that these cells are labels for the rest of their row or column, as appropriate. As such, label cells should be identified as headers, and should never be empty.
Examples:
Do
- select first row, first column or both from the headers drop down list when inserting a table in a LibGuides Rich Text / HTML block.
- select Header row, First column, or both from Word or PowerPoint's Table Design ribbon when inserting a table.
- confirm header cell designations in PDFs using the table editor in accessibility settings in Adobe Pro or other software.
Don't
- leave header cells empty.
