Meaningful Sequence
Answer
When content should be read in a specific order that meaningful sequence should be visual and programmed. Where reading content out of order would make it harder to understand it is important that screen readers and visual readers encounter content in the order that makes sense.
The reading order in LibGuides can be surprising. While viewing your guide, exit the full screen view of your browser, and drag your window to be quite narrow. Scroll through your guide with this narrow viewport to see the order a screen reader will read the boxes on your guide. You can also view your research guide on a mobile device. The reading order is determined by how boxes are arranged in columns, top to bottom and left to right.
In PDFs and PowerPoint documents you will want to confirm that the reading order is as you intended using the accessibility tools.
Examples:
Do
- review and correct reading order in LibGuides by viewing on mobile or by making your browser window narrow and rearranging boxes.
- review and correct reading order in PDFs using the reading order accessibility tool in Adobe Acrobat DC.
- review and correct reading order in PowerPoint using the Arrange -> Selection Pane options in the Home Ribbon.
