Which collections are in the lower level?

Answer

The lower level contains the majority of our on-site physical collection.

Stacks: The stacks encompass the majority of the collection and are organized in call number order. We have a wide range of non-fiction subjects and a small fiction collection. These can be checked out of the library and the loan period depends on the patron’s status (Faculty, Staff, or Student).

Oversize: These are books too large or oddly shaped to be shelved in the general stacks, arranged in call number order. These are distinguished from regular books by a small printed label above the call number that says “OVER”; they circulate the same as stacks books.

NOTE: a small subset of very, very large books (atlases, etc.) will show in the catalog as FOLIO instead of Oversize; they are in the same area, but often shelved horizontally on the very bottom shelf.

Reference Stacks: Reference books such as dictionaries, manuals, research guides, etc. These do not circulate and cannot leave the library! They are distinguished from regular books by a small printed label above the call number that says “REF”. Patrons can use them to study in the library or scan pages but cannot take them home.

Favat Children’s & Young Adult Collection: Children’s and YA books, arranged in call number order A-Z. These are distinguished from regular books by a small printed label above the call number that says “FAVAT”; they circulate the same as regular stacks books. Many popular fiction books will be found here (such as Harry Potter).

Faculty Publications: A small collection of about 200 books written or edited by Northeastern faculty. These have a bright pink sticker that says “FACPUB” to distinguish them from regular stacks books, but they circulate the same as regular books.

Periodical Stacks: Our onsite print journal collection, of the most current 5 years or so of a publication. These do not circulate and should not be removed from the building. Patrons can study them in the library, or use scanners to scan journal articles from them, but they cannot take them home. Most are unbound and gathered in collections of cardboard boxes with multiple issues or volumes inside. The call numbers printed on the boxes range from A1. to TR1.
