Creating Descriptive Transcripts
Answer
This process should be done after videos are finalized, uploaded to Panopto, and captions are corrected. Ask Anaya to add you as an editor to the Video Transcripts guide (only the first time).
In Panopto:
- Watch video with captions on to confirm that captions are corrected. If numbers are used, they should be spelled out.
- While logged into Panopto, browse or search for and locate the video you would like to create a transcript for. When you located it, open settings by hovering over the video.
- Choose Captions from the menu on the left. Under Available Captions, expand the corrected captions. Click on the "Download File" option.
In Notepad or similar editor:
- Open the downloaded caption file.
- Use Find and replace to replace numerals 1-0 with nothing.
- Use Find and replace to replace the remaining symbols ::, --> ::, with nothing.
- With word wrap on, remove empty lines.
- Save file.
In Libguides:
- Open the Video Transcripts guide and add a new page. Title the page after the video transcribed. If your Video is part of a group, you can add it under the appropriate top level page.
- Change the layout to a single column.
- Add a box to the page. Label the box for the video and make it floating.
- Add an html item to the box. Insert a table with 2 columns and approximately as many rows as you'll need (5 per minute). The first row should be headers and add 'descriptive transcript' to the summary.
- In the first cell of the header row, add: Audio.
- In the second cell of the header row add: Visual
- Watch the video. As you go, describe visual elements/what is happening in the second column and add audio elements from your edited caption file that match visuals to the first column.
- Each row should be a distinct visual. Include as little or as much audio as occurs during the visual.
- Keep descriptions brief
- Summarize slides that are read verbatim or thoroughly covered in audio.
- Save content item.
- Give page a frieldly URL after the name of the video using CamelCase.
- Copy the new link to this page.
In Panopto:
- Add the text Transcript available and the link to the video Description in Panopto.
